{"id":3540,"date":"2022-06-17T07:02:17","date_gmt":"2022-06-17T12:02:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.somethingcast.com\/?p=3540"},"modified":"2022-06-17T07:04:46","modified_gmt":"2022-06-17T12:04:46","slug":"blog-pcrs-favorite-non-mainstream-comics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.somethingcast.com\/?p=3540","title":{"rendered":"[BLOG] PCR&#8217;s Favorite Non-Mainstream Comics!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hey All, PCR here!<\/p>\n<p>While driving home from work yesterday, I was re-listening to when we were on <a href=\"https:\/\/guttingthesacredcow.com\">Gutting the Sacred Cow<\/a> (Our episode, 92, can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/the-stst-boys-wipeout-point-break-episode-50\/id1482502667?i=1000494274223\">here<\/a>&#8230;) and we got off on a brief tangent about collecting comic books and.. it got me thinking&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I collected a lot of varied titles.. from popular stuff, to stuff I (mistakenly) thought would increase in value, to things I&#8230; just LOVED reading regardless of what other people thought or how popular it was.<\/p>\n<p>So here&#8217;s a not-entirely-comprehensive list of the stuff that was my guilty pleasure, even though they weren&#8217;t mainstream titles!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Badger<\/strong> &#8211; First Comics<\/p>\n<p>Created by Mike Baron and originally published by Capital Comics before it landed at First Comics, Badger was the story of Norbert Sykes, a Vietnam vet who suffered from Dissociative Identity Disorder.\u00a0 One of those identities is &#8220;The Badger&#8221;, a guy who calls everyone Larry, talks to animals, and is possibly the best martial artist vigilante around.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.somethingcast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Badger-51.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3541 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.somethingcast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Badger-51-192x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"192\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.somethingcast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Badger-51-192x300.jpg 192w, https:\/\/www.somethingcast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Badger-51.jpg 491w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 192px) 100vw, 192px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Dreadstar<\/strong> &#8211; First Comics<\/p>\n<p>Originally published in Marvel&#8217;s offshoot &#8220;Epic&#8221; (it was Epic&#8217;s first title), it eventually landed at First where I found it during my collecting phase.\u00a0 The stories of Vanth Dreadstar, Iron Angel, Oedi, Willow and Skeevo was some of the best writing I had read in comics.\u00a0 The issues I had in my long boxes were written by either creator Jim Starlin or Peter David, and the artwork by Angel Medina was jaw dropping.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.somethingcast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/dreadstar.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3542 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.somethingcast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/dreadstar-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.somethingcast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/dreadstar-194x300.jpg 194w, https:\/\/www.somethingcast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/dreadstar.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Howard Chaykin&#8217;s American Flagg! <\/strong>&#8211; First Comics<\/p>\n<p>One of First Comics&#8217; first titles (you&#8217;re probably seeing a pattern here&#8230;) American Flagg! was one of my first &#8216;non mainstream&#8217; titles, and the one that introduced me to all the other First titles I collected.\u00a0 The story of Reuben Flagg, a former porn star turned Plexus Ranger in 2030 Chicago&#8230; Chaykin&#8217;s style was perfect for this title.\u00a0 The gritty and stylized artwork, the amazing characters, the\u00a0<em>story<\/em>&#8230;\u00a0 Chaykin isn&#8217;t everyone&#8217;s cup of tea, but man did I fall in love with this title.\u00a0 It was the only title I collected that I went out of my way to eventually pick up the entire run of.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.somethingcast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/flagg.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3543 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.somethingcast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/flagg-187x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"187\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.somethingcast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/flagg-187x300.jpg 187w, https:\/\/www.somethingcast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/flagg.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 187px) 100vw, 187px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aliens\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; Dark Horse Comics<\/p>\n<p>I was never really in to Black and White comics.\u00a0 Aliens changed that.\u00a0 The artwork by Mark A. Nelson and story by Mark Verheiden (later of Falling Skies fame) were riveting, and the original 6 issue run is nothing short of a masterpiece<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.somethingcast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/aliens.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3544 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.somethingcast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/aliens-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.somethingcast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/aliens-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.somethingcast.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/aliens.jpg 666w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Grimjack\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; First Comics<\/p>\n<p>While Flagg! was my first foray into&#8230; well..
